Coolsculpting vs Smart Lipo The Pros and Cons of Each

Posted on

There are new body sculpting techniques developed every year. The advancement of cosmetic procedures have allowed people to have the body they desire in shorter times with far less pain than in the past. Patients still choose more invasive methods of fat removal, but for those with small amounts of stubborn fat, CoolSculpting and Smart Lipo has become standard procedures. Each can be done in a short time and both have their own positive vs negative items that can influence your decision to use one or the other.

This procedure is relatively new. The results have been positive for many. CoolSculpting works by freezing fat cells. Once frozen the cells die and are eliminated by the body naturally. The process does not take long, it is non-invasive (no incisions are made on the body), and patients can return to regular activities.

The Pros:

Completed Quickly, Non-invasive, Medications do not need to be discontinued before the procedure, No activity restrictions, No narcotic painkillers needed after.

The Cons:

Bruising is common, Nerve damage is possible, though rare, Numbness may be uncomfortable, Pain can occur, though fades quickly, Repeated treatments may be necessary

Most patients report satisfaction with their CoolSculpting experience. Complications are rare and compared to major procedures (traditional liposuction), mild.

This procedure uses lasers to target fat deposits. Heat from the laser destroys fats cells, causing them to clump together and liquefy. A very thin needle and tube removes the fat. The procedure is quick, minimally invasive, and patients report less pain than with traditional liposuction.

SmartLipo can be used in areas where traditional lipo cannot. With such small needles, scars are less likely to occur, and usually leave small red spots that fade quickly.

The Pros:

Fast procedure (lunchtime lipo), No activity restriction, No narcotics, No scarring, Skin is tightened.

The Cons:

Possible allergy to anesthetic, Local pain could occur, Local skin reaction to laser, Burn from laser if inexperienced doctor, May need repeat procedures.

Both procedures are far faster to have completed than other more invasive procedures. They can be completed and patients can usually leave the facility within an hour. This does not include wait time to have the procedure. Many patients choose to return home, though there are some that go back to work right after the procedure(s). Due to less pain and less reported complications, patients are usually able to return to full normal activities within a day, though some may need to wait several days.

For increased comfort, some doctors recommend over the counter painkillers, though the need for pain relief is not common. Bruising can be treated by cool compresses to the affected area and most people report that their bruises from the suction of the machine for CoolSculpting heals quickly. Some patients also have a stinging sensation in the target areas, this is from the rapid cooling action with CoolSculpting. The stinging often disappears within a few hours, but may persist for up to 24 hours. Any complications noticed from either procedure should be reported to the doctor right away.
