Many men have a condition known as gynecomastia or excess tissue in the breast area. This can be hormonal or due to weight gain. Men are often embarrassed by this condition and are unaware that there exists a procedure to correct it. Breast reduction surgery for men goes under the same name as that for women, but the surgeon removes more tissue and flattens the area. This issue is not as well known as problems arising from too much breast tissue in women, but there has been more advocacy recently. Men are becoming less embarrassed about their need for medical treatment or cosmetic procedures to change problematic areas of the body.<\/p>\n

Men opting to have the procedure can counsel with their surgeon concerning every aspect of reduction. Anesthesia may be general or intravenous depending on the amount of tissue to be removed, your preference, and your doctor’s recommendation.<\/p>\n

When the reason for gynecomastia is caused by excess fat instead of hormones, your doctor may be able to use liposuction to achieve the desired results. Unlike mammaplasty (breast reduction), liposuction involves the insertion of a tube that suctions away the fat. The results are permanent if you follow a healthy lifestyle, exercise, and avoid gaining a large amount of weight.<\/p>\n

Sometimes the weight of the tissue has caused the skin to have extreme stretching. This causes sagging and even nipple enlargement. In these cases the surgeon may need to use excision to remove excess tissue and skin. There may also be a need to use liposuction. The nipple will be repositioned and its size reduced if needed.<\/p>\n

Scarring is unavoidable when there are incisions, the amount of scarring will depend on several factors. Mainly your natural healing process. If you rarely scar then you may have very light, unnoticeable scars from the procedure. Proper care of the wound site can help reduce the appearance of scars. Infection from improper care will usually result in more significant scarring. It is important to follow all directions for aftercare provided by your surgeon.<\/p>\n

There are some complications that could occur, though most are uncommon. Infection, severe scarring, recurrence of gynecomastia, and uneven results. Surgical breast reduction has proved too be the most effective treatment for excessive breast tissue in men.
