This type of procedure is done to treat spider veins, varicose veins, and other small veins that are damaged or noticeably enlarged. It can be done with other procedures or as a stand-alone procedure. The leg is elevated to drain the blood flow away from the section and then a sclerosant (the chemical used to close the vein) is injected. This chemical will damage the vein and scar the lining, making the vein close completely. After the injection, pressure will be applied to the vein, making the blood not return to the area after the procedure. You’ll wear special compression stockings for that pressure to stay. The entire procedure will take under a half-hour, depending on how many veins you’re having treated. It can also be done in a doctor’s office or clinic, which helps cut down on the cost. You may need more than one treatment for it to work, as well.<\/p>\n

Risks of Sclerotherapy<\/b><\/p>\n

Just like any procedure, there are a few risks. These include the chance of blood clots, skin color changes, varicose veins returning, itching, pain, blistering, bruising, and scarring. There can be the severe reaction of an anaphylactic shock, where the body has a severe allergic reaction that results in low blood pressure, loss of consciousness, and can result in death. While this reaction is very rare, it is still a possibility that may occur. Skin color changes around the fixed vein is more common and can take 6 to 12 months to disappear, but for some can be permanent.<\/p>\n

Who Shouldn’t Get Sclerotherapy<\/b><\/p>\n

There are some people who should not get this procedure, including:<\/p>\n
